  • Ms Suganya received the travel grant from Science and Engineering Research Board, Govt. of India, for attending the “12th Microsymposium of Small RNAs” at Institute of Molecular Biotechnology, Austria from 26thto 28thMay 2017 and made a poster on “Piwi-like protein, HIWI2 is aberrantly expressed in retinoblastoma cells and affects cell cycle probably through OTX2 and VEGFR2”.

  • Dr Nivedita Chatterjee received the AIDS Research Scholarship Award, 2017 from NIH Office International AIDS Society 2017 Conference held at Paris from 24thto 26thJuly 2017.

  • Mr Ranjith Kumar was awarded the Travel Grant and he made a free oral presentation on “Gene expression signatures of non-invasive and invasive retinoblastoma: CDC25 as a potential therapeutic target” at the 24th Annual Meeting of Indian Eye Research Group (IERG-ARVO 2017) Conference held at Madurai from 29thto 30thJuly 2017.

  • Mr Anand received the Travel Grant Award and he made a free oral presentation on “Silencing Cystathionine Beta Synthase Could Inhibit VEGF Mediated Neovascularization during Hyperhomocysteniemia in ARPE-19 Cells” at the 24th Annual Meeting of Indian Eye Research Group (IERG-ARVO 2017) Conference held at Madurai from 29thto 30thJuly 2017.

  • Ms Jayashree received the Best Poster Award for her poster entitled “Targeted Cancer cell therapy, using an aptamer chimera to block proinflammatary IL6/Stat3 Signaling, enhances apoptosis and tumor reduction in mouse model of retinoblastoma” at the Indian Eye Research Group (IERG-ARVO 2017) Conference held at Madurai from 29thto 30thJuly 2017.

  • Mr. Madhu Beta was awarded the Ph.D degree at Sastra University, Thanjavur for his Ph.D thesis entitled "Biology of Ocular tumors and Biomakers for Retinoblastoma” under the guide-ship of Dr. S. Krishna Kumar on 21stAugust 2017.

  • Dr J Malathi received the Best Woman Scientist Award in memory of Smt. Radhamani N. Anantha Endowment Award for the year 2017 in the Graduation Ceremony held at Sri. V.D. Swami Auditorium on 20thSeptember 2017.

  • Dr A R Rajalakshmy received the Prof. S Krishnamoorthy Endowment Award for the Best Outgoing Ph.D Student in the Graduation Ceremony held at Sri. V.D. Swami Auditorium on 20thSeptember 2017.

  • Mr R N Naresh Kumar received the Swarnalatha Punshi Award for the year 2017 for his research paper entitled “Inhibition of angiogenesis in endothelial cells by Human Lysyl oxidase propeptide” in the Graduation Ceremony held at Sri. V.D. Swami Auditorium on 20thSeptember 2017.

  • Ms Suganya K was awarded partial scholarship and travel grant to participate in the 2017 NextGen Genomics, Biology, Bioinformatics and Technologies Conference held in Bhubaneswar from 2ndto 4thOctober 2017 and she made a poster presentation on “Genetic screening for CHM gene mutations in choroideremia patients from India”.

  • Mr Amit Chatterjee received travel fellowship for attending the EMBO Workshop and he presented a poster entitled, “Probing the mechanism: How matrix stiffness alters corneal epithelium cytoskeleton rearrangement and alters peptide uptake” at IISER, Pune organised by European Molecular Biology Organization held from 29thOctober to 1stNovember 2017.

  • Mr R N Naresh Kumar received Best Poster Award for “Inhibition of Retinal Angiogenesis by Human Lysyl Oxidase Propeptide” in the 86th Society of Biological Chemists of India (SBC-2017) at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi held between 16thand 19thNovember 2017.

  • Mr. Prasanna Kumar received the Ph.D degree at Deakin University, Australia, for his Ph.D. thesis entitled, “Tumor-specific Oligonucleotide-toxin chimeras for targeted gene therapy” under Prof. Jagat Kanwar, Supervisor, Deakin University & Co-Supervisor, Dr. J. Narayanan, Department of Nano Biotechnology on 25thOctober 2017.

  • Ms. R Rajeswari received the Ph.D degree at Deakin University, Australia, for her Ph.D. thesis entitled, “Deciphering the role of Tumor Microenvironment in the invasion and progression of Retinoblastoma” under Prof. Jagat Kanwar, Deakin University, Australia (Supervisor) & Co-Supervisor: Dr. S. Krishnakumar, Pathology Department on 6thDecember 2017.

  • Mr R Saravanan received the Ph.D degree at The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University on 3rdJanuary 2018 for his thesis entitled, “Identification, molecular cloning and characterization of differentially expressed proteins in the serum of patients with Eales’ disease” under the guide-ship of Dr K N Sulochana.

  • Ms D Sudha was awarded the Ph.D degree at Sastra University, Thanjavur, for his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Clinical, genetic and molecular studies on X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS)” on 20thJanuary 2018 under the guide-ship of Dr A J Pandian.

  • Ms Rebecca Manohar received the Best Presentation Award for her poster entitled "Homocysteinylation of Elastin in Pseudoexfoliaton syndrome, a secondary cause of glaucoma" in the National Conference in Interdisciplinary Research and Innovations in Biosciences NATCON-2018 held at Mohamed Sathak College of Arts and Science, Chennai, on 24thand 25thJanuary 2018.

  • Ms Nikhalashree received Best Poster Award for her poster entitled “Human in vitro cellular model to demonstrate the effect of a proteoglycan peptide in alleviating post-operative fibrosis in glaucoma” in International Congress of Cell Biology 2018 (ICCB 2018) at Hyderabad from 27thto 31stJanuary 2018.

  • Dr Sangeetha Srinivasan was awarded Travel Fellowship for attending the ARVO 2018 Conference at Honolulu, Hawaii, USA from 29thApr to 3rdMay 2018.

  • Ms Bharath Selvi was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS Pilani on 24th May 2016, for her thesis entitled, “Biochemical Mechanism of Homocysteine and its role in Retinal Vascular Diseases” under the guide-ship of Dr K N Sulochana.

  • Ms Srilatha Jasty was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS Pilani on 30th May 2016, for her Ph.D. thesis entitled “Identification and Charecterization of Human Iris Pigment epithelial cells and ciliary pigment epithelial cells in-vitro for retinal stem/progenitor properties", under the guide-ship of Dr S Krishnakumar.

  • Ms Vimalin Jeyalatha was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS Hyderabad Campus on 30th May 2016, for her Ph.D thesis entitled “Prevention of corneal limbal epithelial cell damage during collagen cross linking and novel pathogenic mechanisms involved in keratoconus”, under the guide-ship of Dr J Malathi.

  • Ms A Shabna was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS Hyderabad Campus on 18th July 2016, for her Ph.D thesis entitled “In vitro evaluation of the scope of an indigenously produced Poly hydroxy alkanoate based co-polymer developed from Pseudomonas MNNG-S in cell culture and virology”, under the guide-ship of Dr H N Madhavan.

  • Mr Arun was awarded the Ph.D. degree at Dr M G R University, Chennai on 21st July 2016 for his Ph.D. thesis entitled, “Design and Development of Modulators for LOX to regulate ocular angiogenesis” under the guide-ship of Dr K N Sulochana.

  • Ms S Vidhya was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS Campus Hyderabad on 25th July 2016, for her Ph.D. thesis entitled “Understanding the Role of Adiponectin in Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy; Design and Development of Therapeutic Molecules” under the guide-ship of Dr K N Sulochana.

  • Ms N N Srikrupa was awarded partial scholarship to attend the Next Gen Genomics, Biology, Bioinformatics and Technologies (NGBT) Conference held at Kochi, Kerala from 3rd to 5th October 2016.

  • Mr R Bhuvanasundar, was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS Hyderabad Campus on 30th June 2016 for his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Structural and functional characterization of human Lysyl Oxidase through molecular cloning, expression and in silico studies” under the guide-ship of Dr K N Sulochana.

  • Mr Sivasankar S received the “Best Poster Award” for the paper entitled “Gallic acid inhibits TNF induced angiogenesis and inflammation by potentially binding with TNF – receptor -1” at the 85th Annual Meeting of Society of Biological Chemists held at Mysore from 21st to 24th November 2016.

  • Ms Ramya R received the “D P Burma Best Poster Award” for the paper entitled “Role of paraoxonase-2 in attenuating AGE induced inflammation in macro vascular endothelial cells” at the 85th Annual Meeting of Society of Biological Chemists, Mysore, held from 21st to 24th November 2016.

  • Dr M Vimalin Jeyalatha received the Young Woman Scientist Award in memory of Smt. Sreerangamma N. Narayan and Smt. Radhamani N. Anantha for the year 2016 during the Convocation Ceremony on 25th November 2016

  • Ms Suganya received Swarnalatha Punshi Best Researcher Award in Basic Science for the year 2016 for her research paper entitled “HIWI2 modulates tight junction proteins in retinal pigment epithelial cells through Akt signaling pathway” at the 28th Graduation ceremony of the Sankara Nethralaya held at Sri V.D. Swami Auditorium on 25th November 2016.

  • Ms S Srilekha was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS, Hyderabad Campus on 23rd March 2017 for the thesis entitled “Genetic Analysis of Consanguineous South Indian Families with Leber Congenital Amaurosis and Retinitis pigmentosa using Homozygosity Mapping”, under the guide-ship of Dr N Soumittra.

  • Mr. K. Gopinath was awarded the Ph.D at Sastra University, Thanjavur on 20th March 2015 for the thesis entitled “Role of the endocannabinoid system in retinal Muller glial innate immunity”.

  • Ms. Jaisy Samuel, was awarded the Ph.D at Deakin University , Australia on 9th December 2014 for the thesis entitled “Targeting the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) and apoptotic genes in extrathyroidal tumors“

  • Ms. Nithya Subramanian was awarded the Ph.D degree at Deakin University, Australia on 21st April 2015 for the thesis entitled, “Molecular Insights and ligonucleotide Based Targeted Gene Therapy against Cancer”

  • Dr. K Padma Lakshmi won the “Divya Chaturvedi Gold Medal award” for her outstanding performance on the paper “Sub-speciality of Uveitis and Inflammatory Diseases”, in the DNB examinations held in April 2015.

  • Dr. L. Dhanurekha was awarded Ph.D degree at BITS Pilani on 16th May 2015 for the thesis entitled, Phenotypic and Genotypic methods for Rapid Detection and Drug (First and Second line) Resistance of Tuberculosis”

  • Dr. Iyer Gomathy Narayanan was awarded the Ph.D degree at BITS Pilani 18th May 2015 for the thesis entitled, “Design & Development of small molecule inhibitors Targeting Copper Transporter1 in Copper Mediated Angiogenesis”

  • Dr S S Badrinath was honored with an Award for completing Platinum Anniversary -75 years of service in the field of Ophthalmology, “Celebration Retina - Celebration Life 2015´ at a Conference held at the Sahara Star Mumbai and Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital in Mumbai between from 15th to 17th of May 2015.

  • Dr. T. S. Surendran and Dr. Tarun Sharma gave a speech on blindness at a book release function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee released “Yogikasparsh” - a yoga manual in Braille written by Mrs. Nivedita Joshi.

  • Ms. V. Nalini was awarded Ph.D degree at BITS Pilani on 26th June 2015 for the thesis entitled, “Experimental Evaluation of Molecular Targets for the Clinical management of Ocular Cancers (Retinoblastoma and Uveal Melanoma)”.

  • Dr S. S. Badrinath was presented a Gold Medal for his contribution to ophthalmology, by the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr C Vijaya Baskar at the Annual Convention Inaugural Meeting of the Indian Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society, India (IIRSI) at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai on 4th July 2015.

  • Ms S. Srilekha received the Travel Fellowship for attending the 22nd Annual Meeting of Indian Eye Research Group (IERG) ARVO Conference held at L.V.Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) Hyderabad from 25th to 26th July 2015.

  • Dr Vathsalya Vijay received the “Best Paper Award” for “Combined Radiological and Surgical Intervention for Peri-orbital AV Malformation” at the Curbside Clinix CME held at Narayana Nethralaya, Bangalore, on 9th August 2015

  • Dr. J Biswas was elected as the President of the Inflammation Society of India on 22nd August 2015 at the annual meeting held in ChanRe Rheumatology and Immunology Center and Research, Bangalore.

  • The Terry Fox Foundation at IIT Madras conducted the “Terry Fox Run – A Marathon of Hope” on 23rd August 2015 to raise funds for cancer research and Vision Research Foundation was chosen as the beneficiary of its assistance for the year 2015.

  • Dr. J. Biswas received Prof. E. T. Selvam Oration Award at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology & Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Chennai on 23rd September 2015.

  • Mr R. N. Naresh Kumar and Ms. Gayathree K attended the 3rd International Conference in Angiogenesis: Techniques and Therapeutics held at Sastra University, Thanjavur on 23rd and 24th September 2015. Ms. Gayathree received the Best Poster Award for “Hyperglycemia induces early growth response-1 (EGR1) in human diabetic retina mediating abnormal vascular changes in diabetic retinopathy” and Mr R. N. Naresh Kumar’s paper entitled “Lysyl oxidase propeptide (LOX-PP) inhibits VEGF mediated angiogenesis by down-regulating FAK signalling” was selected for oral presentation under the Young scientist category and he received a shield.

  • Ms. M. K. Janani & Ms. M. Vimalin Jayalatha participated in the IAMM Conference in Clinical Microbiology ARISE – 2015 held at SRM University, Chennai, on the 28th September 2015. Ms. Janani won the First Prize for poster presentation entitled “Novel Immune Regulatory Pathway Associated with Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) and the Recombinant EBV Protein Mediated Inflammation in Retinal Pigment” and Ms. M. Vimalin Jayalatha won the second Prize for poster presentation entitled “Response of Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells towards Leptospiral recurrent Uveitis Antigens”.

  • Dr. Smitha Praveen received the highly prestigious 'Smt. Pushpa Rani Pattanayek Award’ for excellence in community services for the year 2014- 15 at the Annual Conference of the Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACOIN) on 31st October 2015 at Lucknow.

  • Mr. Ravikant Danda received the Travel Fellowship from Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and attended the 14th Human Proteome Organization World Congress HUPO Conference held at Vancouver, Canada from 27th September to 1st October 2015.

  • Dr S S Badrinath was honoured with “Ambassador of Goodwill”, by the International Association of Lions Clubs, for his dedicated service to society on the 8th November 2015 at the Taj Connemara Hotel, Chennai.

  • Dr Lingam Gopal was honored with the Life Time Achievement Award, in Khoo Tek Puat Hospital of Singapore.

  • Dr. Nivedita Chatterjee was awarded the Australia Award Fellowship 2015 by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia. She availed the fellowship at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia at the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences from 2nd October to 17th November, 2015.

  • Mr. N. Murugan, received the “Best Poster in Bacteriology” for the poster entitled “Development and Application of Set of Multiplex PCR for rapid diagnosis of drug resistant genes among clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa” presented (Oral Presentation) at the 39th National Conference of the IAMM held at JIPMER, Puducherry from 27th to 29th November 2015.

  • Ms. A. R. Rajalakshmy received the Young Woman Scientist Award in memory of Smt. Sreerangamma N. Narayan and Smt. Radhamani N. Anantha for the year 2015 at the 27th Graduation Ceremony of Sankara Nethralaya held at Sri. V.D. Swami Auditorium, on 28th November 2015.

  • Ms. Ferdina Marie Sharmila received the Ph.D degree for her thesis entitled “Gene Mapping of Ocular Quantitative Traits” on 28th November 2015 at BITS, Pilani.

  • Ms. N. N. Srikrupa received Swarnalatha Punshi Best Researcher Award in Basic Science for the year 2015 at the 27th Graduation Ceremony of Sankara Nethralaya held at Sri V.D. Swami Auditorium on 28th November 2015.

  • Dr. Rajeswari Mahadevan was honored the “Asia Pacific Regional President” of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators, an educational association dedicated to raising the standard of contact lens education and promoting the safe use of contact lenses worldwide.

  • Ms. Jameel Rizwana H and Ms. Rashima A received the “Endeavour Executive Fellowship Merit Award 2016” from the Department of Education & Training, Australian Government.

  • Dr. Sanjana Suresh Rao, PG Student, won the Dr. S. Kanthimathynathan Endowment Gold Medal Award for Neuro-Ophthalmology.

  • Dr. A V Sai Jyothi received the Prof S Krishnamoorthy Rao Gold Medal for the year 2015, for the Best Outgoing PhD Student at the 27th Graduation ceremony of Sankara Nethralaya on 28th November2015.

  • Dr. V. Umashankar received the Early Career Research Award grant under Young Scientist Scheme – 2015 from Science & Engineering Research Board, Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.

  • Dr. V. Umashankar has been selected as Member, Board of Studies for Bioinformatics, University of Madras, for the year 2016.

  • Ms. Vinita kumari was awarded Ph.D degree at BITS Pilani on 8th January 2016 for the thesis entitled, “Association Study, Analysis for Genetic and Environmental Interaction of Variants in Candidate Genes for Inflammation (ICAM-1, CFH) and Neuroprotection (PEDF, EPO) in Type 2 Diabetic Retinopathy Patients from South India”

  • Ms. M.K. Janani was awarded Ph.D degree at BITS, Pilani on 11th January 2016 for the thesis entitled “A Clinico - Molecular Biological and Genotypic Study on Epstein - Barr virus in Chennai Population”.

  • Ms. C. Sathyapriya was awarded Ph.D degree at Sastra University, Thanjavur on 22nd January 2016 for the thesis entitled, “Homozygosity mapping based genetic analysis of autosomal recessive families affected by Bardet-Biedl syndrome in Indian population”

  • Ms. A R Rajalakshmy, was awarded Ph.D degree at Sastra University, Thanjavur on 15th February 2016 for the thesis entitled, “Molecular Immunology of Ocular Manifestations and Neuroinvasion of Hepatitis C Virus: Immune Response Against Virus and Viral Antigens”.

  • Dr Pukraj Rishi received the Best Paper Award for the paper entitled “Intra-arterial chemotherapy in eyes with retinoblastoma” at the AIOS conference held at Kolkata from 24th to 28th February 2016.

  • Dr T. S. Surendran was conferred the highly prestigious ‘Fellowship of the Royal college of Surgeons’ (FRCS), the world’s highest professional qualification for Surgeons, by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in March 2016.

  • Ms. D. Sudha received the Best Paper Award for the presentation entitled, “Non secreted mutant retinoschisin localizes to the plasma membranes” in the ISHG 2016 conference held at Chennai between 3rd and 5th March, 2016.

  • His Excellency Dr. K. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu presented the “Mayan Award 2015” to Dr. T. S. Surendran, on 20th March 2016. This award was given for his dedicated services rendered to the society by Vista India, Publishers of Health and Fashion.

  • Dr Pramod Bhende received the “Achievement Award” for managing the scientific programs of the 31st Asia Pacific of Academy of Ophthalmology Congress, Taipei, held from 24th to 27th March 2016.

  • Dr S S Badrinath and Dr Vasanthi Badrinath were felicitated at the meeting of the Advanced Vitreo Retinal Techniques and Technology 2014 (AVRT 2014), Ahmedabad for their valuable contributions to the development of “Retina Vitreous Specialty” in India and projecting the capabilities in the international arena.

  • In its pursuit of excellence, Jagadguru Kanchi Sri Chandrasekarendra Nethra Nilayam, was awarded India’s most coveted “Accreditation for Hospitals and Health Care Providers” by National Board of Accreditation for Hospitals (NABH).

  • NABH recognition was renewed for Sankara Nethralaya for its outstanding compliance with the stringent national and international standards aimed towards patient safety and delivery of Quality Health Care.

  • Dr. V. Umashankar was selected as a Member, Board of Studies for Bioinformatics, University of Madras, 2014.

  • Sankara Nethralaya Referral Laboratory is the first private laboratory in Chennai to be recognized by Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) for performing TB culture and first line Drug susceptibility testing under Central TB Division, Government of India.

  • Dr L Vijaya was selected as the Associate Editor of the BMC Ophthalmology Journal.

  • Dr. Ronnie George was elected as the Member of Editorial Board, Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology.

  • Dr. Abhilasha Maheshwari, won the “Divya Chaturvedi Gold Medal Award’ for the outstanding performance on the paper “Sub-speciality of uveitis and inflammatory diseases”, in the Diplomate National Board of Examination held in April 2014

  • Dr. C. Subbulakshmi was awarded the Travel grant from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology for attending the ARVO Conference, USA held on 6th May 14.

  • Dr. Rajeswari Mahadevan received the International Association of Contact Lens Educators award of the year for the Asia pacific region at the ‘British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference & Exhibition at Birmingham, UK on 7th June 2014.

  • Ms. A V Saijyothi was awarded the Ph.D. degree at BITS, Pilani on 11th June 2014 for the thesis entitled, “Proteomic profiling of tear fluid for potential biomarker discovery in Dry Eye Syndrome”.

  • The Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) conducted its FRCS-Ophthalmology examinations in the country after a gap of 10 years and chose Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai as its preferred centre for conducting its examinations in India.

  • Dr Pukhraj Rishi received the “Nataraj Pillai Best Free Paper Award 2014” in Sankara Nethralaya Alumni Silver Jubilee Meet held from 12th to 13th July 2014.

  • Dr T S Surendran received the prestigious “Dr S.S. Badrinath Medal of Honor” for the year 2015, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of Ophthalmology at the Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association - TNOA Conference, held at Madurai on 24th July 2014.

  • Sankara Nethralaya - Elite School of Optometry (ESO) received the Limca National Record on 15.04.2014. ESO set a Limca record on World Sight Day - 8th October, 2012. The most number of vision screenings for 8,469 school children was conducted by ESO in 38 different schools between 8.30am to 4.30pm. The screening was done as a three-phased protocol including diagnosing refractive errors, prescription generation and diagnosis if eye ailments.

  • Dr. H. N. Madhavan recognized as the “PIONEER MOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGIST IN INDIA” for the detection of infection agents in the clinical specimens by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta, USA.

  • THE FIFTH Patent Certificate granted to the patentee Vision Research Foundation by the Patent office Chennai, Government of India for an invention entitled “Method for simultaneous detection and discrimination of Bacterial, Fungal, Parasitic and Viral Infections of eye and central nervous system” Patent No.: US 8,465,951 B2 in accordance with the provisions of the Patents Act 1970.
